Why Bespoke Ukuleles?

People often ask me why I build ukuleles.

The answer usually surprises them because it doesn't begin with the instrument.

It begins with the musician.

When I first started playing the ukulele, I was fortunate to spend time with some remarkable teachers and builders. One of those people was Matt Dahlberg. During many conversations about instruments, music, and what makes a ukulele truly special, one thought kept coming up.

What if, instead of trying to build the ideal ukulele, you could build the ideal ukulele for a particular musician?

That idea stayed with me.

As I continued playing, meeting musicians from around the world, and learning from players with very different styles and expectations, it became increasingly clear that no two musicians are alike. Every player has different hands, a different touch, different musical influences, and a different idea of what the perfect instrument should sound and feel like.

Many wonderful instruments—including  exceptional ukuleles—have been built by following a builder's own vision, and some of my favorite instruments were created that way.

I simply found myself taking a different approach.

Rather than beginning with my own idea of the ideal ukulele, I begin by getting to know the person who will be playing it.

I've never believed that one person has all the answers. Throughout my career I've learned that the best solutions come from bringing together the right people. That's why every Bespoke Ukulele begins with a tone consultation—not just with me, but, more importantly, together with some of the world's most respected ukulele players, teachers, and musicians.

Together, we discover what you're really looking for in an instrument. Only then do I begin translating those ideas into the design.

From that point on, every decision has a purpose. The materials. The bracing. The geometry. The setup. Every choice should contribute to creating the instrument we're building together.

I don't believe there's a single "best" ukulele.

I believe there are instruments that are simply a better match for different musicians.

My goal has never been to build the ukulele I would want to play.

My goal is to build the instrument you've always wanted to play.

Because I believe the greatest instrument isn't the one with the rarest wood or the most impressive specifications.

It's the one that brings you the greatest joy every time you pick it up.

I'm often asked how someone with a Ph.D. in Materials Science ends up building ukuleles.

Looking back, the path makes more sense than I ever expected.

For more than thirty years I've worked on developing advanced materials and manufacturing technologies. Before becoming a full-time luthier, I worked with several Silicon Valley startups where questioning established ideas was simply part of everyday life. Later, I founded Bespoken Spirits, where I developed a patented technology that reduced the aging time of whiskey from years to just days.

At first glance those industries seem completely unrelated.

To me, they all shared something in common.

Whether it was whiskey making, steel making, power generation, or building musical instruments, they were industries built on decades—sometimes centuries—of accumulated experience. Their traditions had been refined over generations, and there was tremendous value in that knowledge.

What fascinated me was understanding why those traditions worked.

My goal has never been to replace experience with science.

It's to combine the wisdom of experienced craftsmen and musicians with engineering, measurement, and a deeper understanding of the principles behind what they already do so brilliantly.

When I discovered the ukulele, something else was added to that curiosity.

Joy.

The joy of making music.

The joy of craftsmanship.

The joy of watching complete strangers become friends through a simple four-string instrument.

The joy of a community that welcomes everyone with open arms.

The joy of ohana.

That combination of curiosity and joy is what eventually led me to start building.

Today, engineering helps me ask better questions.

Craftsmanship helps me turn those answers into instruments.

The word Manufaktur has always meant something special to me.

To me, it means taking responsibility for every detail.

Every Bespoke Ukulele is designed and built entirely by me. From selecting the wood and carving the braces to shaping the neck, voicing the soundboard, and completing the final setup, I'm involved in every step of the journey.

Working this way means I build only a small number of instruments each year.

It also means every instrument receives the time, care, and attention it deserves.

Every measurement I make.

Every brace I carve.

Every conversation I have.

Every hour spent refining an instrument.

Serves one purpose.

Joy.

Not just my own joy in building it.

But your joy in playing it.

The joy of making music with family.

The joy of sharing songs with friends.

The joy of a spontaneous kanikapila.

The joy of discovering something new every time you open the case.

I don't believe a ukulele changes the world by itself.

I believe the joy it brings to people does.

That's why, for every Bespoke Ukulele that's commissioned, another instrument is funded for a talented young musician who otherwise might never have the opportunity to own one.

I'm also working toward donating classroom sets of ukuleles to schools, helping introduce more children to music, community, and the joy this remarkable instrument has brought into my own life.
